Skatteverket in Sweden: digital transformation with Office 365

Our society continues to become more digitized, leading to constantly changing legislation, increased need for efficiency, and a growing digital way of working. Therefore, Skatteverket in Sweden has taken a significant step forward and decided to introduce Office 365 and Teams as central tools for the organization.

After careful examination and assessment, Skatteverket in Sweden has concluded that Office 365 and Teams meet the needs and security requirements of the public sector. Previously, there were concerns about transferring sensitive information to American cloud services, but changes in the EU Commission’s data protection legislation assess that the services meet the requirements for securing digitally stored information. Additionally, they have looked at how other organizations, including banks, utilize similar technologies.

“But we expected quite a few would request the decision and the underlying material, so we have taken some extra time to write a report, a basis, which we can share with others,” says Peter Nordström, spokesperson for Skatteverket in Sweden.

The decision is not only a response to changes in legislation but also a reaction to increased demands for efficiency and flexibility in a time of increasing digitalization. The increased use of telecommuting and the need for effective collaboration tools have made it necessary for the organization to take this step.

“It also shows the importance of building a strong cyber defense through good cooperation between private and public partners. That being said, we have not delved into how they have done it in depth – but in the whole, it matters,” adds Nordström.

Although the decision to implement Office 365 and Teams is a step forward, Skatteverket in Sweden emphasizes the importance of continuously evaluating and adapting their approach to technology and digitalization.

“No, we have greatly benefited from this work. Now we have methods and approaches to tackle this type of collaboration solutions – a good foundation to build on. And we will always need other solutions as a complement,” says Nordström.

With the introduction of Office 365 and Teams, Skatteverket in Sweden is ready to meet the challenges of the digital age and continue to deliver efficient and reliable services to citizens.
