In today’s fast-paced digital world, accessibility is more than just a legal requirement—it’s a vital part of fostering inclusivity and equality. Åstorp’s journey to making their documents, communications, and online content accessible—and WCAG 2.2 compliant—serves as a compelling case study in overcoming challenges and embracing technology.
WCAG 2.2 requires all documents published by councils to meet accessibility standards. Faced with this new requirement, Åstorp took proactive steps to ensure that their vast collection of resources adhered to these standards.
“The solution ensures that our employees use the correct accessibility issues and updated templates. Dania has been quick with their service from day one and is always accommodating with questions and has provided good advice and tips in the accessibility of our templates,” says Madeleine Stenström, Web Manager in the Digitalisation and Communication Department.
Their digital repository consists of around 15,000 PDF documents on their website, along with 800 .docx files and 500 .doc files. Ensuring that all these documents meet accessibility standards, especially for individuals with disabilities, presented a significant challenge. Additionally, Åstorp regularly distributes important information through digital letters and communications to residents, businesses, and internal staff members.
To address these challenges, Åstorp implemented an agile project framework and integrated Assist Pro into their workflow. Assist Pro, a powerful add-on for Microsoft Office, enabled Åstorp to efficiently scan and correct accessibility issues in their documents, ensuring compliance with WCAG 2.2. The tool’s intuitive interface guided users through the process, making it easier to identify and fix accessibility issues before exporting documents as accessible PDFs, PDF/UA, or HTML files.
The impact of Assist Pro was immediately evident. Users reported an increased awareness of accessibility issues and a greater commitment to creating accessible content. The majority expressed a strong interest in continuing to use Assist Pro, recognizing its benefits not just for compliance, but for enhancing user experience and social responsibility.
By prioritizing accessibility and leveraging Assist Pro, Åstorp has taken a significant step towards creating a more inclusive digital environment. Their commitment to accessibility not only ensures legal compliance but also enhances user satisfaction and reinforces their dedication to social responsibility. The success of this project will serve as a guiding example for other organizations facing similar challenges, proving that with the right tools and approach, achieving accessibility is not just possible—it’s transformative.
The implementation of Assist Pro has resulted in a significant improvement in the document production process in Åstorp. The councils has achieved a more efficient and structured approach to document management, which has freed up resources and time that can now be dedicated to the residents.
In the long term, Assist Pro positions Åstorp as a leading councils in digital document accessibility, aligning with Sweden’s goal of being one of the world’s leading digital countries. By continuing to leverage advanced digital solutions, Åstorp can remain at the forefront of innovation and efficiency, further improving the council’s services and contributing to Sweden’s overall digital vision.
